Are you ready for some serious, nail-biting, action-packed adventure? Are you a fan of the psychological, political, espionage and/or crime thriller genre? Then this series should definitely be on your list of shows you need to watch. Fasten your seat belts!
THE ROLLING SOLDIER follows a CIA Special Ops field operative and skilled sniper named Connor Flynn (series creator/writer/director John Tague). At the beginning of the series, Connor wakes up from what he’s been told was a 10 year coma. The cause? Well, Connor’s mission in Afghanistan was altered when he hit an IED (improvised explosive device) which resulted in a terrible head injury. Connor’s location has been unknown for years while his best friend/fellow agent Rigo Salazar (Rigo Sanchez) and ex-CIA operative Inga (Kiki Aldonas) watch over him and help him fully heal.

Things start to get interesting pretty quick when Connor begins struggling with the effects of post traumatic stress disorder through flashbacks while he and his team are on the run after being wrongly accused of selling secret plans to terrorists. Connor’s situation becomes even more complicated when his wife, Alisa (Alisa Allapach), a CIA Black Ops interrogation/deception specialist, is involved and their children Max (Max Tadman) and Sadie (London Thor) are brought into it. Sadie attempts to uncover the truth about her parents while Max wants absolutely nothing to do with it. Connor’s Black Ops team leader Darwin (Thompson Blake) is responsible for helping him escape Afghanistan and has taken up guardianship of Sadie and Max. We soon see another side to Connor which is the loyal husband and loving father side. You thought your family was dysfunctional? I don’t know about you guys, but this is pretty complicated compared to awkward family dinners/reunions.

Basically, Connor is in serious trouble when he’s accused of stealing classified film contained on a hard drive during operations in Afghanistan. Agent Lothbrok (Mette Holt), the head of the shady government group that sent him there, leads the mission. A manhunt to bring Connor to justice. Agent Lothbrok is joined by Agent Roscoe Scott (Scott Peat). We’re caught in the middle of a scary conspiracy that puts the lives of Connor’s wife and children in danger. Connor finds himself caught in a web of lies. He must reveal the true intentions of the people that he thought he could trust. Pretty intense, right?
THE ROLLING SOLDIER has released its first season of 7 episodes on its official website and YouTube channel. This series is filled with excitement, suspense, stunts, strong characters, strong story and pretty much what you would ask for when it comes to a espionage kind of show. Viewers will definitely want to watch all of the episodes in one sitting. I’m currently raising my hand because that’s what I did.

There were quite a few elements of this series that I enjoyed. The cinematography (Sergio Crego) was beautiful. I’m definitely a fan of it because it successfully played a vital role in telling this action-packed story. I do have other words to describe the cinematography, but I can’t get the words out other than just staring at the screen saying “It’s so pretty.” I’m going to try though. It’s visually stunning. It’s intriguing. It matches the tempo and the mood of the action. This is excellent for viewers because the series provides an immersive, captivating experience. Viewers will feel like they are in the middle of all of the action. The flashbacks were well done and used effectively. They will constantly put viewers in Connor’s shoes as he struggles with PTSD throughout Season 1 of the series.
The series is filled with amazing and convincing performances from the cast. They all come together to form a solid ensemble.
A fight sequence in THE ROLLING SOLDIER.
The fight sequences were very believable. I really loved the headlights of the cars serving as the backdrop for an epic fight scene. The close up shot of Agent Doug Lester (William Joseph Hill) after being shot in the stomach area was definitely a nice touch. Even though most of this series is serious, there was still time for some laughs. There’s a scene where Connor forces a stranger named Rachael (Rebeka Pinon-Cassidy) to drive him toward San Francisco. She claims that she has to feed her cat. I found that hilarious, but maybe it’s the fact that I am a cat lady. If anyone else finds that part hilarious, I’m giving you a high-five!
Behind the scenes of THE ROLLING SOLDIER.
Many of the elements in this show are strong. The openings of the episodes would have some sort of sound or music leading into the first scene. I am a big fan of that because it really built up the anticipation after the ending of the previous episode. The episodes would end in a similar way with the same scoring or room tone/ambient sounds. I am also a fan of the credits at the end of Episode 1. The style was really awesome! I noticed it was the only episode with that kind of style so it must not have fit the creator’s vision. The replacement works great too. The action builds and builds while accompanied by appropriate scoring.
Pop the popcorn. Sit back. Try not to bite your nails. They’ll thank you for it later.
