Madonna famously sang that “music makes the people come together,” and in the case of three long lost friends, their love of music not only reunites them but also brings them closer than ever before in the new five part comedy web series BACK TO YOUNG, written and created by the Norton brothers (James and Christopher) of U.K. based-Monkey Dribble Films and scheduled to premiere this November.
Described as a “comedy bromance” by the series’ co-creators, the show follows the adventures of three childhood friends: accountant Kev (played by Kevin Over), the not quite grownup Tom (played by Jamie Swifft), and struggling actor Jim a.k.a. Looks (played by Elliot Ryan), who reunite after 10 years after Tom wins tickets to see the group’s favorite rock band, BLACK WOLF. However, with only 48 hours to get to the concert, the three friends face a wild series of obstacles in their quest to see their idols, one that brings them closer than they had ever been before. The show also stars Joanna Howden as Bex, Looks’ sister and an aspiring dancer, and Alexandria MacLeod as Kev’s control freak girlfriend Sarah.
The Norton Brothers, each having experience producing music videos and short films, saw web series as not only a growing industry in entertainment but also as the next logical step in their evolution as filmmakers. “We have never done comedy before and (we) thought the web series format would give us a great opportunity to try this out. We wanted to do something that would appeal to a wide audience and be enjoyable. Shows like FRIENDS and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER came to mind straight away as formats that have worked – telling a story about a group of friends who are living life together. We decided to have the series start with some friends meeting up for the first time after 10 years and go on a road trip together to see a band in concert and see where they end up. Once we started writing the idea it just grew into what it is today. We are really excited to see what people think,” they say.
As pre-production for BACK TO YOUNG winds down and filming begins, the process of creating the series has proved to be a rewarding one for the Nortons. “We have spent a lot of time working on the script and getting that just right. Casting is all done now and we started rehearsals last weekend. It was great to start to see the script come to life,” the brothers say. In addition, the two brothers are also spending time on other aspects of the show’s production, including promoting their show through social media (Facebook, Twitter) and also the music featured in the series. “One way we have done this is (by) making the band in the story a real band. BLACK WOLF is a British rock band who have kindly let us use their sound and branding within the story. We have found this a great way to collaborate with other independent artists to help cross promote products/brands. We have also done this with a local independent clothing brand – Young & Loaded – who have agreed to help promote the series and in return we will have one of our characters wear their clothing in the series,” they say.
While dreams and ambitions change as people become older and more jaded, BACK TO YOUNG is a story about how some of those dreams and ambitions remain, and how they can come true with a little help from friends. “As we get older we can become more cynical about our childhood dreams and expectations of life. BACK TO YOUNG, as the name suggests, looks at the importance of keeping hold of some of these naive childhood dreams and how old friendships from the past can help make that happen,” the Nortons say.
