Holy crap.
I just read the manifesto, and I was amazed by how accurately and concisely you stated what I have come to believe about the web as a free medium for creativity. My writing partner Justin Bondi and I have been sticking our noses into Hollywood for a long time. We’re outsiders, living in Chicago, but we’ve managed to sell several screenplays. Still, after a decade of work, we have no freaking movies made! Why, well the story is always the same. “We love your script, but it’s too…” fill in the blank. Dark, weird, funny, different. The script readers often connect with our work, but it’s never made it past the incredible financial hurdles to become an actual piece of entertainment to share with the world.
Last year, we said screw it, why not make our own? We stewed on some ideas that we thought we could pull off on a shoe-string budget. The scripts we’ve sold to Hollywood have tended to be high concept, sci-fi action stories with more character development than the producers feel should be in a roller coaster ride. We wanted to stick with what we love – putting flawed characters we love into perilous situations and making them work together to try to get out of them. After a million brainstorming sessions, we settled on our concept, a ensemble cast post apocalyptic comedy.
Out of the gate, we wanted to start VERY small. We had planned to shoot it ourselves on inexpensive cameras. But then we ended up meeting both a director and a videographer who connected with the material immediately and brought their incredible skill and equipment to the team. The core cast was so enthusiastic it took us off guard. People invited us onto their property to shoot for days or weeks at a time. We connected with a remarkable composer who got our sense of humor and could translate it into a score.
And now it’s out. Well, it’s coming out. Today, we released the 2nd episode of DARK AGE, a bi-weekly first season with ten, ten-minute episodes. Of course we’re looking for the magic, a way to connect with people, to hear what they like and what they don’t. To really share this stuff. Especially now, as we’re plotting our season two! We’re not there yet. But we’re hopeful.
Thanks for putting together this site. I love what you’re doing here.
Best,
Andy Ludington
(co-creator, DARK AGE)
Thanks for sharing your story Andy! Hollywood is a business first and these people all know that they will cease to have jobs if they don’t put dollars first. There will never be freedom of creative expression there.
While we are given creative freedom with this medium, the downside is we have to do all the leg work ourselves when it comes to building an audience. It’s more work than the show itself most of the time.
Are we covering your show yet? I’ll have to check, and make sure we do 🙂
