Today was once again #WebSeriesWednesday and I took the opportunity to watch the nerdy genre series ‘Standard Action.’ The series is a sort of a low budget Lord of the Rings done in the style of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with a nod towards classic RPG videogames.

After I finished watching the series I took the opportunity to peruse their website and youtube channel. The channel is up near 200,000 views, the site has fan made material, hundreds of followers on twitter etc.

The team is clearly doing something right and I think I have an idea as to what that is. This show appeals to a very specific niche of gamers and role players – people who spend a lot of time online. The jokes are typically references to fantasy elements commonly found in movies and games. In other words the show knows its audience well and the characters they have created appeal very well to it.

The web series itself is not all that is offered. The channel has outtakes, cast interviews, trailers, tons of bonus content. I have not timed everything all out but I would not be surprised to see the bonus content out number the web series itself. This allows the producers to keep their fans interested with new content being added all the time.

Ultimately the key take away from Standard Action will be a series that has found its niche and has connected with it. Be it through lots of meet ups at conventions, screenings, or encouraging the fans to participate online, Standard Action is exemplary for growing and cultivating an audience.
