NASA and the Houston Cinema Arts Society will offer filmmakers around the world a chance to share their works inspired by and using actual NASA imagery through “CineSpace,” a new short film competition premiering at the Houston Cinema Arts Festival, November 12 – 19, 2015.

The competition features a top prize of $10,000, along with several other honors including $4,000 for ‘Film Best Depicting Spirit of Future Exploration of Space.”

Filmmakers can wade through and download video clips directly from the NASA website, linked on the CineSpace web page. The available footage is quite extensive.

It should also be noted that NASA imagery is considered public domain and without copyright. Filmmakers are free to use NASA produced videos without consent with the stipulation that images are credited to NASA and the organization is not portrayed as endorsing any products, services or opinions. Also individual likenesses are owned by the individual, and require permission for reproduction.

“Films featuring real NASA footage collected from 50 years of exploring the universe will be judged on the same creativity, innovation and attention to detail that are the hallmarks of spaceflight. Works will compete for cash prizes and other recognition and the opportunity to be shown to audiences both on and off the Earth.”
